Financing Your Electrical Project: Breaking Down Monthly Payments for Major Upgrades

Table of Contents

Major electrical work has an annoying habit of becoming necessary before the household budget feels ready for it. A panel may need upgrading, a generator becomes a priority after repeated outages, or an EV arrives and suddenly that ordinary garage outlet is not enough.

Financing can turn one large electrical bill into predictable monthly payments, allowing qualified homeowners to complete necessary or planned work without paying the entire cost upfront.

In our view, financing makes the most sense when it helps you address the right electrical project without encouraging you to buy more electrical work than your home actually needs.

What Does It Mean To Finance An Electrical Project?

Financing an electrical project simply means paying for qualifying electrical work over an agreed period rather than paying the entire project cost at once.

Instead of writing one large check for a $7,000, $12,000, or $20,000 project, an approved homeowner may make monthly payments according to the financing agreement.

Those payments can depend on:

  • Total project cost
  • Loan or financing term
  • Interest rate or APR
  • Creditworthiness
  • Available promotional offers
  • Amount financed
  • Lender requirements
  • Any applicable fees

At Starnes Electric LLC, financing is currently offered through Wisetack for qualifying customers and projects. According to our financing information, customers can explore financing for projects up to $25,000, with terms ranging from 3 to 60 months. Available APRs can range from 0% to 35.9% depending on creditworthiness and other terms, and available options are subject to approval.

That range is important because “financing available” does not mean everyone receives the same payment.

One homeowner might qualify for a relatively short promotional term.

Another might choose a longer repayment period because keeping the monthly payment lower is more important.

Someone else may decide the financing cost is too high and pay cash instead.

All three could be perfectly sensible decisions.

This is why I am not a fan of looking only at the monthly payment.

“$199 a month” sounds comfortable. But homeowners should also ask:

For how many months? At what APR? And what will I pay in total?

A comfortable payment is only one part of the equation.

How Can I Get Financing For A Major Electrical Project?

The process usually starts after you have a realistic idea of what the electrical work will cost.

That order matters.

Do not start with, “How much financing can I get?” and then invent electrical projects until you reach that number.

Start with the electrical need.

For example:

Your panel may be outdated and need replacement.

Perhaps you want a whole-home generator.

Maybe you are renovating a kitchen and need several new circuits.

Or perhaps you bought an EV and discovered the existing electrical service needs additional work before an appropriate Level 2 charger can be installed.

The electrician evaluates the project, discusses the scope, and provides pricing. From there, financing can be considered as one way to pay for the work.

For eligible Starnes Electric LLC customers, our current Wisetack financing process allows customers to check financing options without affecting their credit score during the initial prequalification process. Final financing remains subject to approval and individual terms.

Before agreeing to financing, we recommend looking at several things.

Compare the monthly payment with the total repayment

Longer terms can make a large project feel much easier on the monthly budget.

That can be valuable.

But when interest applies, spreading payments over a longer period can also increase the total amount you pay.

Do not evaluate one without the other.

Understand the APR

APR gives you an idea of the financing cost.

Starnes Electric LLC’s current financing page states that available Wisetack offers can range from 0% to 35.9% APR based on creditworthiness, with state rate caps potentially applying.

That is obviously a very wide range.

A 0% offer and a 30% offer are completely different financial decisions even if both technically qualify as “monthly financing.”

Read the actual offer.

Check for additional fees

Our current Wisetack financing information states that qualifying options do not include prepayment penalties, origination fees, or compounding interest.

That can make repayment more straightforward, particularly if you decide to pay the project off earlier.

Still, always review the exact terms presented to you before accepting financing.

Keep the project scope realistic

Financing can make a $10,000 project easier to handle.

It does not magically make unnecessary work necessary.

A trustworthy electrician should recommend electrical work based on the property, safety, capacity, and homeowner’s goals rather than the financing limit.

That distinction matters.

The question should be:

“What does my home need, and what is the most comfortable way to pay for it?”

Not:

“I was approved for $20,000. What can we spend it on?”

Can Electrical Upgrades Be Paid For In Monthly Installments?

Yes. Qualifying electrical upgrades can often be financed so the homeowner pays in monthly installments rather than covering the entire expense upfront.

Starnes Electric LLC’s current financing program offers eligible projects with repayment terms from 3 to 60 months, subject to approval and the particular offer received.

Monthly installments can be particularly useful when an electrical project cannot comfortably wait.

Imagine your electrical panel has a serious problem.

You receive an estimate for a needed replacement, but you were planning to use this month’s savings for something else.

You have three basic options:

  • Wait and keep using questionable equipment.
  • Drain savings immediately.
  • Or, if financially appropriate and approved, spread the cost over time.

Sometimes financing gives homeowners useful breathing room.

There is an important difference, however, between necessary electrical work and nice-to-have upgrades.

Financing an unsafe or failing panel so the problem can be addressed promptly may feel very different from financing decorative landscape lighting simply because you would rather keep cash in the bank.

Neither decision is automatically right or wrong.

It is about priorities.

Monthly payments can also help with planned projects when several electrical upgrades are being done together.

Suppose you are remodeling a home and the electrical scope includes:

  • Panel improvements
  • New kitchen circuits
  • Recessed lighting
  • Additional receptacles
  • EV charger wiring
  • Outdoor electrical work

Completing the electrical work as one coordinated project may make more sense than breaking it into several disconnected projects solely because of cash flow.

Financing can sometimes make that approach more manageable.

But here is the rule I would keep taped to the refrigerator:

Affordable monthly payment does not automatically mean affordable purchase.

Look at the total cost.

Every time.

What Electrical Projects Can Usually Be Financed?

Eligibility depends on the financing provider and approval, but major residential electrical work is exactly where payment options can become useful because these projects can involve substantial labor, equipment, materials, permitting, and system upgrades.

At Starnes Electric LLC, qualifying projects through the current Wisetack program may be financed up to $25,000.

Projects where homeowners may want to explore financing include:

Electrical panel replacements and upgrades

Panel work can become necessary when existing equipment is outdated, damaged, inadequate for planned loads, or otherwise needs replacement.

It may also be part of a larger electrification project involving EV charging, new HVAC equipment, or electric appliances.

Whole-home generators

Backup power is a larger investment than changing a light fixture.

A generator project can involve the generator itself, electrical connections, transfer equipment, site preparation, and other installation work.

For homeowners who consider backup power important but do not want the entire project cost hitting one month’s budget, financing can be worth evaluating.

EV charger installations

Some EV charger jobs are simple.

Others uncover a bigger project.

The electrical panel may need work. The charger could be located far from the service equipment. A new circuit and substantial conductor run may be required.

Suddenly, plugging in the car involves considerably more than hanging a charger on the garage wall.

Rewiring projects

Older or damaged wiring can make rewiring one of the larger electrical projects a homeowner encounters.

Depending on the house and scope, work may involve multiple circuits, devices, fixtures, panels, and extensive access.

Major renovations

Kitchen remodels, basement conversions, additions, and whole-home renovations can generate a long list of electrical work.

For example, a kitchen renovation might require:

  • Dedicated appliance circuits
  • New receptacles
  • Lighting circuits
  • Under-cabinet lighting
  • Range or oven wiring
  • Island electrical service
  • Code-related electrical updates

The cabinets may get all the attention when everyone sees the finished kitchen.

Behind them is an electrical project nobody photographs for Instagram.

Outdoor electrical projects

Large outdoor electrical improvements can include landscape lighting, detached structures, pool or spa electrical work, equipment circuits, and exterior power.

Smart-home and electrical modernization

Certain homeowners may also finance broader modernization projects involving new panels, smart electrical equipment, lighting controls, additional circuits, or other substantial upgrades.

Not every small service call needs financing, obviously.

Nobody wants a five-year payment plan for one light switch.

Financing becomes most useful when the project is large enough that paying in installments meaningfully improves household cash flow.

Financing Your Electrical Project Breaking Down Monthly Payments for Major Upgrades Middle

How Much Would Monthly Payments Be For A Major Electrical Upgrade?

This is usually the first question homeowners actually want answered.

And unfortunately, the correct answer begins with everyone’s favorite phrase:

It depends.

Monthly payments depend on the amount financed, APR, and repayment term.

Starnes Electric LLC’s financing provider gives a real example on our current financing page: a $1,200 purchase could cost approximately $104.89 per month for 12 months at an 8.9% APR, or $400 per month for three months at 0% APR. Actual offers vary according to creditworthiness and approval.

For larger electrical projects, the easiest way to understand the relationship is to start with hypothetical 0% examples.

These are illustrations only and do not mean a 0% offer will be available.

If there were no interest, dividing the project cost would look roughly like this:

Amount Financed 12 Months 24 Months 36 Months 60 Months
$3,000 $250/month $125/month $83/month $50/month
$6,000 $500/month $250/month $167/month $100/month
$10,000 $833/month $417/month $278/month $167/month
$15,000 $1,250/month $625/month $417/month $250/month
$20,000 $1,667/month $833/month $556/month $333/month
$25,000 $2,083/month $1,042/month $694/month $417/month

Again, those numbers assume 0% interest purely to demonstrate how term length affects the payment.

Real financing with interest will generally have higher payments and a higher total repayment amount.

This table also shows why longer terms are attractive.

Take a hypothetical $15,000 electrical project.

At zero interest, spreading it over 12 months would mean $1,250 per month.

Stretching it across 60 months would reduce that simple illustration to $250 per month.

That feels dramatically easier.

But when interest is involved, the longer repayment period may substantially increase the overall cost.

This is why homeowners should compare at least four numbers before signing:

  • Project price
  • Monthly payment
  • Number of payments
  • Total repayment

If one of those numbers is missing, ask for it.

There is another practical question worth asking:

Can you comfortably make the payment during an expensive month?

Do not judge affordability based on your easiest month of the year.

Think about Christmas.

Property taxes.

Car repairs.

Back-to-school expenses.

That mysterious week when the refrigerator, washing machine, and dog’s veterinarian all apparently coordinate their schedules.

A good financing payment should fit your realistic budget, not the imaginary version of your budget where nothing unexpected ever happens.

Fix the Electrical Problem Without Blowing Up This Month’s Budget With Starnes Electric LLC

Major electrical work is not always something homeowners get to schedule around the perfect financial moment.

Panels fail.

Generators become a priority.

Renovations uncover electrical problems.

Families buy EVs.

Older homes eventually need modernization.

At Starnes Electric LLC, we believe homeowners should understand both the electrical solution and their payment options before moving forward.

That is why we currently partner with Wisetack to offer financing for qualifying projects up to $25,000, with available terms from 3 to 60 months. Checking options during prequalification does not affect your credit score, and actual financing offers remain subject to approval, creditworthiness, and lender terms.

Financing is not automatically the right answer for every household.

Sometimes paying cash makes more sense.

Sometimes a shorter financing term is preferable.

And sometimes spreading an unexpected electrical investment across monthly payments makes an important project much more manageable.

Our job is to help determine what electrical work your home actually needs.

From there, you can decide how you want to pay for it.

If you are considering a panel upgrade, generator, EV charger, rewiring project, renovation, or another substantial electrical improvement, Starnes Electric LLC can evaluate the electrical work, provide a clear estimate, and help qualified homeowners explore available financing options.

Because an electrical project should improve your home.

It should not leave you staring at your bank account afterward wondering whether you can afford groceries until Thursday.
